Types and characteristics of automotive chassis suspension

Date: 2024-12-31

There are four different types of automotive chassis suspensions, each with unique structures and characteristics.

Firstly, there is the torsion beam suspension, which is mainly composed of shock absorbers, torsion beams, and coil springs, and belongs to the semi independent suspension.

Its significant advantage lies in saving chassis space, thereby effectively increasing the capacity of passengers and trunk in the car.

Meanwhile, vehicles equipped with this suspension system also perform well in terms of comfort and have lower maintenance costs in the later stages. Next, we will introduce the independent suspension system, whose core components include coil springs, shock absorbers, swing bearings, and lower swing arms. This type of suspension is widely used in the front wheels of ordinary private cars, known for its simple structure and space saving features, which help optimize the interior space. However, it may have some tilting issues when the vehicle is turning. Let's take a look at the double wishbone independent suspension, which consists of an upper wishbone, swing bearings, lower wishbone, shock absorbers, and damping springs.

This type of suspension has the main advantage of being sturdy and durable, and is often adopted by some off-road vehicle suspensions. But correspondingly, it occupies a larger space and has a higher manufacturing cost, usually seen in models priced at least 200000 yuan. Finally, there is a multi link independent suspension system consisting of upper control arm, positioning arm, steering rod, front control arm, lower control arm, and stabilizer bar. This suspension performs well in terms of comfort and is commonly used in mid to high end models, but the cost is relatively high.
